Are you still basking in the glow of Valentine’s Day or cursing its existence? One thing is clear: love is on the brain. As such, it has us thinking about romance and its relationship to the cinema in this beautiful city we call home. Before February ends, let’s celebrate romantic movies set in the City of Angels.
Pretty Woman was the third highest grossing film of 1990 and one of the highest grossing romantic comedies of all time. Written by J.F. Lawton and directed by Gary Marshall, the movie starred Richard Gere and relative newcomer Julia Roberts in a star-making performance as a down-on-her-luck prostitute. Her character is hired to escort a wealthy businessman to his social events and they develop feelings for each other. Scenes were shot on location at the Beverly Wilshire, the memorable shopping spree shot on Rodeo, and the downtown restaurant set in Cicada where you can still request the “Pretty Woman table.”
Jerry Maguire may be considered a sports movie but the “You complete me” line has been ingrained in the hearts of many. Written and directed Cameron Crowe, the film stars Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger, and Cuba Gooding Jr. and was shot in over 70 locations around Los Angeles and Southern California!
500 Days of Summer written directed by Marc Webb has Joseph Gordon-Levitt tragically falling for Zooey Deschanel. The non-linear narrative not only makes you feel all the feels but is most certainly a love letter to downtown Los Angeles. From the Bradbury Building to the Angels Knoll bench, you’ll go on an emotional journey with these characters with the Los Angeles cityscape providing the perfect backdrop.
