Another holiday is here, and we’re still mostly celebrating at home. Whether you’re coupled up, singled out, or wishing you hadn’t rushed into quarantining with a Tinder hookup, there’s a love story in this list that’s sure to set the mood for an enchanting night in. So slurp some oysters, pop the champagne, and melt some chocolate because it’s time for the perfect Valentine’s Day movie marathon featuring films that have really steamed up our campus over the years:
6pm He Loves Me… He Loves Me Not (2002)
If you aren’t watching a French film starring Audrey Tautou on Valentine’s Day, then you probably didn’t get why we told you to melt some chocolate 😉 Start the night with this steamy thriller to get your heart racing!
Pro tip: reading subtitles flexes your sexiest organ of all, the brain.
You’ll need to lighten the mood after all that Frenchin’ tension, and a Christopher Guest mockumentary will slice it with an autoharp string. It’s a little like watching Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara in Schitt’s Creek, except it’s their love, not their wealth, that’s unrequited. Hilarious and charming, this is an absolute must see.
10pm Vanilla Sky (2001)
If you like your romance with a side of WTF?! then it’s time to revisit this Blockbuster fantasy. At the midpoint of your marathon, you’ll start to wonder what’s real and what’s a dream (kind of like 2020).
Another film that may hit a little close to home is this Valentine’s Day meets Groundhog Day dramedy with heart. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll forget the whole thing and have to fall in love all over again – and again. A story fit for love in the time of Corona.
2am Moonlight (2016)
Perhaps most famous for its Oscar win bait and switch with La La Land, this gorgeous film is the perfect way to end the night. It masterfully weaves together conflicts of poverty, queerness, masculinity, and race in a way that is both complex and painfully direct. Sensual, visceral, and poetic, you’ll end the holiday in love with life.
